By Jafar Mugera

At least 16 media personalities have registered for the inaugural Taqaddum Media Qur’an Competitions, organised by the Muslim Journalists Taqaddum Sacco Ltd — a savings and investment association founded seven years ago to improve the welfare of Muslim media practitioners.

The event, scheduled for August 30, at the Parliament of Uganda, is intended to promote Qur’anic knowledge, foster unity among Muslim media practitioners, and inspire spiritual growth within the profession.

This historic first edition has drawn contestants from radio, television, print and digital platforms. The overall winner will walk away with a fully sponsored Umrah trip to Makkah and Madinah, courtesy of Makkah-Madinah Hajj Services.

The confirmed participants are: Shakira Nalugo, Abdul Kimera, Ibrahim Kigozi, Umar Kyeyune, Hafitha Issa, Shahista Hajara Namale, Mahad Wasajja, Faridah Bongole, Huzaifa Ssegirinya, Ali Mubiru, Hakim Ssemugooma, Abubakar Swidik, Haruna Lubwama, Abdallah Musisi, Hamida Haruna and Said Abdallah Kafeero.

Pearl FM, a Muslim-focused radio station, has the highest number of contestants, followed by Buganda Kingdom’s CBS FM.

According to the organisers, hosting the first-ever Qur’an competition for journalists at the national Parliament underscores its significance and the need to integrate faith with professional responsibilities.

“This maiden competition is a milestone for Muslim journalists. It gives us an opportunity to celebrate the Qur’an while reminding ourselves to embody its values in the media space, said Hatmah Naluggwa, the vice chairperson of the organising committee.

“Our intent is to deepen the love and understanding of the Holy Qur’an, and foster spiritual growth among Muslim media practitioners,” she added.

Abubaker Muwonge, the Sacco’s chairperson said that they intend to make the Qur’an competitions an annual event.

“We plan to make the Qur’an competitions an annual flagship event, creating a platform that blends professional excellence with spiritual growth,” Muwonge said.

Beyond its economic empowerment agenda, Muslim Journalists Taqaddum Sacco Ltd is committed to promoting Islamic values, education and unity through media and community outreach.
