Be God-conscious, Mubaje tells politicians

By Ahmed Idriss

Politicians have been urged to embrace God-consciousness in their civic duties and avoid turning politics into a platform for dishonesty, immorality, and false promises.

The call was made by the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, during a thanksgiving (Shukr) ceremony organized by the family of the late Haj Bagye of Kasule Village, Buwungu Subcounty in Bugiri Muslim District.

“We call for clean politics — not the kind that promotes immorality. Politics should not be reduced to a dirty game of lies, mudslinging, and character assassination. Such misguided mindsets do nothing to uplift society,” the Mufti emphasized, as the country prepares for the forthcoming national polls.

The event was held in honour of Hajjat Amina Nakadama, a family member who had successfully returned from performing the Hajj pilgrimage to the holy sanctuaries of Makkah and Madinah in Saudi Arabia.

In his address, the Mufti congratulated Hajjat Nakadama, who is aspiring for the position of Woman Member of Parliament for Bugiri District in the 2026 polls, urging her to remain exemplary and God-fearing.

He cautioned against the practice of making campaign promises that lie outside the legal mandate of a Member of Parliament.

“Do not promise things you know you cannot deliver. It is better to speak truthfully than to give people false hope,” Mubaje advised.

The Mufti also reminded Muslim politicians not to abandon their Islamic values and identity, such as wearing the veil in public, in pursuit of political popularity.

The Mufti urged believers to never lose trust in Almighty Allah. He encouraged them to strengthen their faith and, if necessary, make bold financial decisions — even selling part of their property — to fulfill the religious obligation of Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam.

“Strive to live righteously and always express sincere gratitude to Allah if you wish to receive His divine rewards, favours, and blessings,” he said.
