Entering the House of Allah with respect

By Hatmah Nalugwa Ssekaaya
During Ramadhan, the masjid becomes the heart of the community—alive with salah, Qur’an, duʿa, and unity. Islam teaches us that the masjid is not just a place we enter with our feet, but with our manners, humility, and awareness of Allah.
Allah S.W says:
“The mosques of Allah are only to be maintained by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day…” – (Qur’an 9:18)
Maintaining the masjid includes how we behave within it.

Adab of the masjid in Ramadhan:
- Enter with tranquility: Avoid rushing, pushing, or loud behavior—even when the masjid is crowded.
- Observe cleanliness: Come with clean clothes and a pleasant smell; but, avoid strong odors that may disturb others.
- Lower your voice: The masjid is a place of remembrance, not casual conversation.
- Switch off or silence phones: Prevent distractions during salah and Qur’an recitation.
- Respect prayer space: Avoid stepping over people, blocking rows, or disturbing those in prayer.
- Make room for others: Especially during Taraweeh and Jumu‘ah—sharing space is an act of brotherhood.
The Prophet Muhammad S.A.W warned against disturbing others in the masjid, emphasizing that peace and respect are part of worship.
Good manners in the masjid protect the sanctity of worship and help everyone focus on Allah. In Ramadhan especially, small acts of consideration carry great reward.
Practical Tip: Before entering the masjid, pause and renew your intention: “I enter the house of Allah with humility, peace, and respect.”
(Allaahum-maf-tah lee abwaaba rahmatik…)
Takeaway: The masjid is a place of mercy—enter it with manners, leave it with light.
