In a big recognition of her competency, Hajjat Zulaika Nabukeera, the head teacher of Nabisunsa Girls School has been elected the President of the association of Secondary School head teachers of Uganda (ASSHU).
Nabukeera garnered 445 votes, defeating Saul Sekanjako who managed to gather only 120 votes during the ASSHU’s annual general meeting that was hosted at Masaka secondary school recently.
ASSHU is a body that unites both private and government secondary schools with a mission of improving the education system through networking and benchmarking with one another.
In an interview with the Friday call, Hajjat Nabukeera said amendment of the association’s constitution and construction of the leadership centre in Bombo is top on her agenda.
“I want to thank the members who overwhelmingly voted for me. We have five key priorities we intend to work on in the three-year period,” Nabukeera said.
Nabukeera thanked President Yoweri Museveni for his contribution to the association.
“We thank the President for supporting the construction of our leadership centre with sh500m and injecting another sh200m in our SACCO. We want our SACCO to grow to the level of the WAZALENDO SACCO to boost our resources,” Hajjat Nabukeera said.
In regard to the leadership centre, Nabukeera said it will host their meetings and also hire it out to get some money.
Unlike UNATU, Hajjat Kabuye, said their association believes in dialogue and not strikes.
“We have the issue of salary disparities between science and arts teachers that has caused divisionism amongst us, and we intend to bridge this gap through advocacy and not strikes,” Nabukeera said.
In regard to the amendment of their constitution, Nabukeera said they have discovered that it has a number of issues that need to be addressed.
