Trustworthiness and honesty are among the greatest signs of faith. A Muslim’s word should be as firm as a promise before Allah. The Prophet Muhammad as known even by his enemies as Al-Amīn — the Trustworthy.
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala says:
“O you who believe! Fulfill [all] contracts.” (Qur’an 5:1)
And the Prophet said:
“The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is entrusted, he betrays the trust.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
How to practice this adab:
- Be careful with your words: Don’t promise unless you intend to fulfill it.
- Follow through promptly: Whether it is a small favor or a business deal, keep your commitments.
- Communicate honestly: If something prevents you from keeping your word, explain sincerely and apologize.
- Respect deadlines and appointments: Arriving on time and keeping agreements is part of Islamic reliability.
Honouring promises builds trust, preserves relationships, and reflects the strength of a believer’s character. Breaking promises carelessly, even in small matters, weakens the ummah and displeases Allah.
Practical tip: Treat every commitment — even the “I will call you later” — as an amaana (trust). Allah is a witness to all that we say.
Takeaway: A believer’s word is a covenant — keep it, and Allah will keep you in His mercy.
