Makkah-Madinah Hajj Services launches swadaqah initiative for needy communities
Makkah-Madinah Hajj Services has embarked on a noble endeavour to uplift the needy in local communities through its newly launched swadaqah (charity) initiative. This initiative utilises funds accumulated from Umrah and Hajj pilgrims over the years, channeling them towards meaningful projects that benefit those in need.
“A small percentage of what we charge for the Hajj and Umrah trips is allocated for this noble cause,” said Sheikh Ahmada Sserunyiigo, a Mutawwif (pilgrimage guide) at Makkah-Madinah Hajj Services.
The initiative was unveiled on Sunday, August 18, 2024, as the Hajj and Umrah firm flagged off 220 pilgrims, heading to the holy city of Makkah for Umrah (lesser pilgrimage) during a function held at Maya nature resort in Wakiso district.
In its inaugural effort, the firm has donated Shs 13 million, saved from previous pilgrims, to Ibn Majah Junior School and Qur’an Memorisation Centre in Mpigi district. This donation will facilitate the construction of a classroom block to improve the school’s learning environment.
“Our directors believe that every good deed counts, especially in the afterlife. This swadaqah initiative allows our pilgrims to benefit from the extra rewards of swadaqatul jariyyah [ongoing charity], contributing to a brighter future for our communities,” said Hajji Sadat Ssewanyana, the firm’s managing director.
“Makkah-Madinah Hajj Services is committed to continuing this initiative, allocating a portion of contributions from future Hajj and Umrah pilgrims towards supporting worthy causes,” Ssewanyana added.
Sheikh Zakariya Kyewalyanga, the chairman of Uganda Bureau of Hajj Affairs (UBHA) lauded the initiative as a selfless act that sets a shining example of corporate social responsibility and community service.
Kyewalyanga also urged intending pilgrims for Hajj 2025 to start saving for the holy pilgrimage given that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has strict deadlines.
In a related development, Makkah-Madinah Hajj Services has entered into a cooperation agreement with Muslim Journalists Taqaddum Sacco Ltd which will make the performance of Umrah and Hajj easy and affordable for Muslim journalists.
“We are delighted to be entering into this relationship with a firm reputed for the way it facilitates Allah’s guests in the performance of Hajj and Umrah rites. Muslim journalists now have a chance to share their firsthand Hajj and Umrah experiences,” said Zaidah Ramathan, the vice chairperson of Muslim Journalists Taqaddum Sacco Ltd.
