Manners in the online world

The internet and social media have become part of our daily life, but as Muslims, our character (akhlaq) should remain consistent—whether in person or online. Islam teaches us that every word we speak or type is recorded:
“Not a word does he utter but that with him is an observer ready [to record].” (Qur’an 50:18)
How to practice digital adab:
- Begin with Salam: Start messages and emails with Assalaam alaykhum to bring blessings into your communication.
- Avoid gossip and backbiting online: Sharing rumours or mocking others on social media is the same as doing it face-to-face! And is equally sinful.
- Be mindful of your tone: Words without facial expression can easily be misunderstood. Choose clarity and kindness.
- Share what benefits: Spread reminders, knowledge, and positivity, not harmful or useless content.
Online platforms are an extension of our lives, and our behaviour there reflects our imaan. What we type or share may reach thousands and bring ongoing reward or sin. So, before posting or forwarding, please pause and ask: Is this truthful? Is it beneficial? Will Allah be pleased with me for sharing it?
Takeaway: Digital adab is real adab. Let your online presence reflect the beauty of Islam.
Assalam alaykum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh
