Modesty in conduct: The beauty of haya in Islam

With Hatmah Naluggwa Ssekaya)

Assalam alaykum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh

In Islam, modesty (haya) is not just about dress—it is a complete way of being. It governs how we speak, behave, and interact with others. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“Every religion has a distinct characteristic, and the distinct characteristic of Islam is modesty.” (Ibn Majah)

Haya is a light that beautifies the believer. It is what prevents us from indecent words, arrogance, or behaviour that displeases Allah (S.W). It is a reminder that Allah sees us at all times, both in private and in public.

How to practice modesty in conduct:

  • In speech: Speak gently, avoid boastfulness, and do not engage in vulgar or loud talk.
  • In appearance: Dress with dignity and humility, avoiding what draws unnecessary attention.
  • In behaviour: Lower your gaze, maintain respectful boundaries, and carry yourself with grace and humility.

Modesty protects the heart from pride and sin. It preserves dignity and earns Allah’s love. The Prophet (PBUH) said: “Modesty brings nothing except good.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

Practical tip: Before stepping out or posting online, ask yourself: Would I be comfortable if this were presented before Allah? Haya is your inner compass—follow it.

Takeaway: True modesty is not restriction, but rather it is protection and beauty that shines from faith.

Assalaam alaykhum wa Rahmatullah.
