Mubaje urges Muslims to uphold legacies of charity

By Ahmed Idriss

The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, has emphasized the importance of preserving legacies built on generosity, community bonds, and sustainable charity, rather than material wealth.

The Mufti made the call during a memorial gathering for the late Haj Abdu-Karim Walugembe, a renowned businessman and devoted volunteer of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), held at Walugembe’s ancestral home in Kalungu on Saturday, April 5.

The event, attended by Muslim leaders, civil administrators, and community members, served as both a tribute to Walugembe’s life of service and a reflection on the enduring impact of selflessness. The late businessman was celebrated for his commitment to the Muslim community, particularly through his contributions to UMSC initiatives.

Mufti Mubaje noted that true legacy is not measured by accumulated riches but by the lasting good one leaves behind.

Drawing parallels to modern times, the Mufti lamented how many heirs of influential Muslim leaders and philanthropists have forsaken their parents’ charitable traditions, redirecting their support away from community institutions like UMSC.

“So many family heads who were well known as UMSC diehards, after their death, their heirs closed the doors to the Council and have since shifted their allegiance to individuals who were never close to their parents,” Mubaje observed.

The Mufti urged parents and community leaders to actively teach younger generations the importance of charity, service, and moral responsibility.

“We must prepare our children to be responsible citizens who will honour and sustain the legacies of service and charity long after we depart from this earthly life,” he emphasized.

He also called for unity within the Muslim community, stressing that upholding the values of past leaders ensures collective progress and divine favour.

The event marked Mufti Mubaje’s first official visit to the region since his controversial re-election in early March.
