UMSC launches arbitration council

The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has officially unveiled the members of the Muslim Arbitration and Reconciliation Council (MAC), marking the Council’s full readiness to handle disputes and promote reconciliation in line with the UMSC Constitution.

The unveiling ceremony introduced the appointed members of the MAC, who were selected last year, as the body tasked with ensuring peaceful resolution of conflicts within the Muslim community through Islamic principles and arbitration mechanisms.

Leadership and membership

The Council is chaired by Dr. Adam Rajab Makmot Kibwanga, a distinguished scholar and legal expert. Dr. Kibwanga holds an LLB from Makerere University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre (LDC), an M.A. from Uganda Christian University, a PGD in Management from Gulu University, an M.A. in Peace and Conflict Resolution from the University of Innsbruck (Austria), and a PhD in Law from the University of Bradford (UK).

He currently serves as a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head of Subject at the LDC, is an Advocate, and a former Human Rights Officer with the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC).

Other members of the Council include Counsel Bunyasin Ibrahim (Secretary/Registrar), Sheikh Abubakar Musoke, Sheikh Shafie Songolo, Sheikh Kassim Kamugisha, and Elder Counsel Zinsaze Ismail, a retired Chief Magistrate.

 New appointment to the Majlis Al Ulama

During the same session, Sheikh Eden Tabu Uthuman was sworn in as the new representative of the Northern Muslim Region on the Majlis Al Ulama. Sheikh Uthuman holds a bachelor’s degree in Islamic studies from the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), an M.A. in Public Administration and Management from Gulu University, and is currently a final-year Sharia student at the Islamic Call University.
