Muslims challenged to emulate late Sheikh Muzaata

By Abdul Wahid Kakande and Hajji Ntale Yunus

Hundreds of Muslims on Sunday, December 7, 2025, gathered at Kigoogwa, Matugga in Wakiso district for the special prayers (dua) in the memory of Sheikh Nuhu Muzaata, the ex-spokesperson and director of Dawa at the office of the Supreme Mufti at Kibuli.

Muzaata died on December 4, 2020. He was an outspoken and unique Muslim cleric whose listenership went beyond the Muslim community.

Speaking at the event, Prince Kassim Nakibinge Kakungulu, the titular head of the Muslim community in Uganda implored clerics under the office of the Supreme Mufti to emulate him.

“I am not saying this to spread hatred but following the death of Sheikh Zubair Kayongo, some of our colleagues were against the election of another Supreme Mufti. This was a trial moment for us, and it took the efforts of Sheikh Muzaata to have the new Supreme Mufti elected. He did not do this because he cherished divisionism but because we had issues that had divided us and had not been resolved,” Nakibinge said.

He added that if it was not for the courageous character of Sheikh Muzaata, the office of the Supreme Mufti would be no more.

“You should emulate him. It took his sole efforts to protect this office otherwise we had been finished because a number of our sheikhs such as Abdul Karim Ssentamu, Abdul Hakiim SsekimpiMustafa Bahiga, Hassan Kirya and others had been killed. This was a trial moment for us,” Nakibinge said.

Nakibinge said Muzaata fully defended Islam.

“When I told him that some of our colleagues were against the election of another Supreme Mufti, Muzaata told me that we couldn’t embrace unity without ironing out the issues that divided us. He then told me that he had taken over the battle and he indeed won it,” Nakibinge noted.

“When he died, many thought that this marked the end of the office of the Supreme Mufti, and you all know what happened, but Allah has been on our side because we went through it successfully. “You should therefore emulate him,” Nakibinge said.

Nakibinge also commended sheikh Abdul Noor- Lunanooba for not only being steadfast but standing firm.

Supreme Mufti Sheikh Muhammad Shaban Galabuzi urged Muslims who aspire to be remembered like Muzaata to build their legacy by giving in the way of Allah.

“We have a number of projects that we are doing, and you should come to us so that you also build your legacy,” Galabuzi said.

Sheikh Yasin Kiweewa, the director of Dawa at the office of the Supreme Mufti thanked Hajji Hassan Bulwadda for embracing the office of the Supreme Mufti projects.

Sheikh Yahaya Sultan Sseganaga underscored the importance of duas in Islam saying it should be the way of Muslims.

“Nobody should lie to you that these duas are against Islam. Dua is a powerful thing in Islam,” Sseganga said.
