Nakadama rallies Ugandans to plant trees

The Third Deputy Prime Minister, Hajjat Lukia Nakadama Isanga, has amplified the environment conservation campaign by urging Ugandans to replant trees whenever they are cut down for charcoal production, poles, firewood and other uses.

Tree planting is one of the widely recommended activities to restore degraded forests, which are key in environmental conversation and climate change.

Nakadama made the remarks during Juma prayers on March 22, at the Gaddafi National Mosque in Old Kampala.
This coincided with the annual event initiated by the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) on the second Friday of the Holy Month of Ramadan, codenamed “Green Friday.”

During this Green Friday, Muslims are rallied to conserve the environment by planting trees nationwide.
Nakadama commended Hajjat Afua Ssebyala, for leading the Green campaign.

She remarked that the prevailing heatwave experienced in the country is a result of deforestation, which could be mitigated through afforestation campaigns such as the Ramadhan Green Fridays.

In the earlier remarks at the same event, Hajj Abbas Ssekyanzi Muluubya, the UMSC Secretary-General, also urged all Muslim leaders to intensify the Green Friday campaign in their respective areas.

According to Hajjat Ssebyala, more than 400,000 trees have been planted in 15 districts ever since the campaign was launched. She added that they aim at planting one million trees.
