OBITUARY: Dr Ashad Sentongo: A legacy of visionary leader, scholar and peace champion
On the morning of June 30, the Muslim community was saddened to learn of the passing of Dr Ashad Ssentongo Lutale, a renowned educationist, scholar, and peacemaker.
While many knew him by his father, the late Hajji Asadu Lutale, Dr Ssentongo built an illustrious career that left an indelible mark on the lives of countless individuals, writes Nasser Magezi.
When the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) opened its doors to the public in 1988, Dr Ashad Ssentongo Lutale was among the pioneer 81 students. He enrolled for a Bachelor of Arts in Islamic studies and Arabic language.
He went on to become the university’s pioneer guild president as his peers quickly recognized his unique leadership qualities.
After graduating from IUIU with a B.A. in Islamic Studies and Arabic Language plus a post graduate diploma in Education, he enrolled at George Mason University in Virginia, USA, which he left with a PhD in Conflict Analysis and Resolution.
His commitment to learning led him to pursue specialized studies and training at Brandeis University, in Waltham, Massachusetts, USA,
the United Nations (UN) department of political and peace building affairs, the National Defence University, and the Damelin school of management in South Africa.
At George Mason University, Dr Sentongo became a Drucie French Cumbie Fellow, focusing on power-sharing and ethnic conflict in Africa.
In 2013, he joined the Auschwitz Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (AIPR) as the Director of Africa Programs. In this role, he collaborated with the African Union, the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), and the East African Community to build, train, and provide technical assistance to the African Network for Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention.
His expertise and dedication were instrumental in shaping strategies to prevent violence and foster peace across the continent.
He was also a consultant to various government and international organizations, offering his insights on defense, development, countering violent extremism, conflict, and peace building.
His profound impact in these fields has left an indelible mark on countless lives and communities.
Dr Ssentongo’s life was a testament to the power of education, leadership, and the relentless pursuit of peace.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations to strive for a more just and peaceful world.
