The Police have arrested one Ivan Kibahiro who has allegedly been impersonating the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje to defraud unsuspecting Muslims.
Police spokesman, Fred Enanga, told journalists during the weekly press briefing at the police headquarters at Naguru in Kampala, that, the suspect is part of a group of fraudsters which mainly targets very important persons (VIPs).
“We arrested one of the prime conmen called Ivan Kibahiro who has been masquerading as the DPP [Director of Public Prosecutions], and soliciting for money from VIPs claiming that the DPP has a sister who is getting married so they should contribute,” Enanga said.
Among Kibahiro’s victims is an unnamed senior government official who wired Shs 8 million to one of the conman’s phone numbers.
“We got this man with three sim cards under numbers 0703699339, 0758586343 and 0750514446 – he also used one of the numbers there to masquerade as the Mufti, Sheikh Mubaje, and also conned people,” Enanga said.
Kibahiro is also said to have attempted to defraud the secretariat of Operation Wealth Creation, a government anti-poverty initiative led by President Yoweri Museveni’s young brother, Gen Caleb Akandwanaho aka Salim Saleh.
