Sheikh Bukenya named 2nd Deputy Mufti
By Ahmed Idriss
Dr Hafith Muhammad Haruna Bukenya has been appointed as the new second deputy Mufti at Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), replacing Sheikh Muhammad Ali Waiswa, who was promoted to the position of first deputy Mufti after the impeachment of Sheikh Abdullah Ssemambo.
Sheikh Bukenya’s appointment was announced on Thursday, October 24, by the UMSC director of Sharia, Dr Ziyad Lubanga.
Sheikh Bukenya beat two other contenders; Sheikh Muhammad Hood Ggaliwango, the Kadhi of Lubaga Muslim district, and Sheikh Abdukarim Katamba, the regional assistant to the Mufti for the Ankole region.
Prior to his appointment, Bukenya served as the Kadhi of Kayunga Muslim district in the East Buganda Muslim region.
He instantly took oath of office and pledged to work for and promote the interests of Islam.
The Mufti, Sheikh Shaban Mubaje, regretted the period of nearly 10 years lost to infighting but expressed happiness that the Muslim community is once again united and on a clear path to development.
Sheikh is a renowned Qurán reciter who was thrust into the limelight in the early 2000s as he led Taraweeh prayers at Wandegeya Mosque in Kampala.
