Overlooking the historic battlefield of Badr—about 130 km southwest of the holy city of Madinah—stands Jabal Malaikah (the Mountain of Angels). This revered mountain serves as a testament to the divine intervention that shaped the outcome of the Battle of Badr, where the Muslim army triumphed against overwhelming odds.
In 624 CE, the Quraysh of Makkah, determined to destroy the growing Muslim community, advanced toward Madinah with a formidable army. Vastly outnumbered and ill-equipped, the Muslim forces faced an immense challenge. In response to the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) fervent prayers, Allah sent a legion of angels to aid the believers.
As the two forces confronted each other on the plains of Badr, the Prophet (peace be upon him) reassured his closest companion, Abu Bakr:
“O Abu Bakr, glad tidings for you; Allah’s victory has approached. By Allah, I can see Jibril on his mount in the midst of a sandstorm.”
He then recited the Quranic verse: “Their multitude will be put to flight, and they will turn their backs in retreat.” [Quran 54:45]
Jabal Malaikah lies next to Katheeb al-Hannan, a sand mountain where the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions first camped upon arriving at Badr. Here, he spent the entire night in prayer, seeking divine assistance.
According to Islamic tradition, Allah sent thousands of angels to descend upon Jabal Malaikah. Led by Jibril (Gabriel), the first force of angels joined the right flank of the Muslim army, where Abu Bakr was stationed. A second force, led by Mikaeel (Michael), supported the left flank, where Ali ibn Abi Talib took command.
With the angels striking terror into the hearts of their opponents, the Quraysh army was decisively defeated, marking a pivotal moment in Islamic history.
In recent years, Jabal Malaikah has drawn adventurers and spiritual seekers from around the world, eager to explore its historical and religious significance. Recognizing its importance, the Saudi Arabian government has made efforts to ensure the site’s accessibility while preserving its sanctity.
Visitors are encouraged to approach Jabal Malaikah with respect, as it remains a deeply sacred site for many. Though the mountain itself remains largely untouched by modern development, surrounding areas have seen infrastructure improvements, including basic accommodations and guided tours for those wishing to learn more about its rich history.
