The Strength to Say “I am Sorry”

In Islam, seeking forgiveness is not a sign of weakness—it is a sign of strength, humility, and sincerity. A true believer is quick to turn back to Allah, and quick to mend relationships with people.
Allah says:
“And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a Garden as wide as the heavens and the earth.” – (Qur’an 3:133)
The Prophet Muhammad S.A.W, though free from sin, sought Allah’s forgiveness more than seventy times a day.
Adab of Seeking Forgiveness from Allah:
- Acknowledge the mistake without excuses.
- Feel sincere regret in the heart.
- Resolve not to repeat the sin.
- Increase istighfar, saying Astaghfirullah often.
Adab of Apologizing to People:
- Apologize promptly when you wrong someone.
- Speak sincerely, without blaming others.
- Seek forgiveness even if you feel justified.
- Make amends where possible.
The Prophet S.A.W said:
“All the children of Adam error, and the best of those who error are those who repent.” – (Tirmidhi)
Unresolved wrongs harden the heart and damage relationships. Seeking forgiveness purifies the soul and restores peace between people.
Practical Tip: End each day with self-reflection: ask Allah for forgiveness and, if you hurt anyone, make the intention to apologize the next day.
Takeaway: Hearts are healed through humility, and sins are erased through sincere repentance.
