UMSC, Direct Aid Society Partner to Support Inmates

In a significant step towards promoting humanitarian values and addressing social challenges, the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) and the Kuwait-based International Muslim Charity, Direct Aid Society, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU). The official signing ceremony took place on August 8th, 2023, at the headquarters of the Direct Aid Society in Najjanankumbi, on the outskirts of Kampala.

The MoU was signed by Hon. Counsel Haj Muhammad Ali Aluma, the Secretary General of UMSC, and Mr. Nourelhuda Elaagab Abdallah Mohammed, the Country Director representing Direct Aid Society. Both parties emphasize that the agreement is aligned with the divine values enshrined in the Glorious Quranic verses, such as chapter 90, verses 13-14 which emphasize “freeing a bondman,” and chapter 9, verse 60 which addresses alms for those in bondage and debt.

Hon. Muhammad Ali Aluma, the UMSC Secretary General, pointed out that current statistics reveal an overwhelming number of inmates in prisons incarcerated for minor offenses, including failure to clear debts. He expressed the intention of the program to collaborate with government authorities to contribute towards the decongestion of jails.

The initiative aims to provide the necessary support to prisoners, following the established legal court processes. “This agreement will not only aid in addressing prison congestion but also promote reconciliation between victims and perpetrators. Additionally, it will offer guidance and counseling to ex-prisoners, facilitating their reintegration into the community and the rebuilding of their lives,” remarked Hon. Aluma.

The event was witnessed by Dr. Sheikh Ziyad Swaleh Lubanga, the UMSC Director of Sharia, and Dr. Idris Muhamed, in charge of Education programs. The partnership between UMSC and Direct Aid Society signifies a joint commitment to humanitarian causes and marks a significant stride towards alleviating challenges faced by incarcerated individuals and promoting their reintegration into society.
