UMSC Women Chairperson attributes increased cases of domestic violence to poverty

by Jamil Ssekajja

Muslim women leaders from across the country have been urged to increase their involvement in income-generating activities if they are to curb domestic violence and also reduce household poverty.

This call was made during a leadership workshop organized by the Women Council of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) at the National Mosque at Old Kampala.

According to the lead organizer Sofia Kenyanga, the workshop was aimed at training Muslim women in leadership, domestic violence prevention and how to fight household poverty.

The workshop was attended by senior UMSC officials, economists, and various women leaders from across the country. Farida Kibowa, the National Women’s Chairperson was the chief guest.

In her speech, Kibowa blamed domestic violence on extreme poverty and sometimes women denying their husbands their sexual rights.

She called upon women to stop entirely depending financially on their husbands. She said this will not only reduce household poverty but also domestic violence as the two she argued have a direct connection.
