Setting goals for 2025: Combine vision with faith
By Leilah Najjuuko
Assalam alaykum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
As we step into a new year, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the blessings of Allah (SWT) and set intentions for what lies ahead. In Islam, setting goals is not just about personal achievement, it’s about aligning our efforts with the pleasure of Allah, improving ourselves, and serving others.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to strive for excellence (ihsan) in everything we do. He said:
“The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both.” (Sahih Muslim 2664)
This shows that personal growth, when paired with faith, brings us closer to Allah.
Step 1: Reflect with gratitude
Before setting your 2025 goals, take time to reflect on 2024. Ask yourself:
• What blessings did I experience?
• What lessons did Allah teach me through challenges?
• What opportunities can I build on?
This is in line with the Quranic principle of gratitude:
“If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favour].” (Quran 14:7)
Write down your goals for 2025 in areas like personal development, career, relationships, and spiritual growth. Ensure these goals align with your values as a Muslim.
Step 2: Create a prayer board
A prayer board is a beautiful way to combine goal-setting with tawakkul (trust in Allah). It’s more than just a vision board; it’s a reminder to turn to Allah for guidance.
Here’s how to make one:
1. Start with dua (supplication): Begin by asking Allah for clarity and guidance in setting your goals.
2. Gather materials: Use a board, images, markers, or simply a piece of paper.
3. Include Islamic inspiration: Add Quranic verses, hadith, or duas that motivate you. For example:
• For financial growth: “Indeed, Allah is the Provider, the firm possessor of strength.” (Quran 51:58)
• For patience: “Indeed, with hardship [comes] ease.” (Quran 94:6)
4. Add visuals and prayers: Use pictures or words to represent your goals, and write short prayers for each one.
If a full board isn’t possible, simply write your goals and duas on paper and place it where you’ll see it daily. A manilla paper/chart can work too.
Step 3: Start your day with intention
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“The deeds are considered by the intentions.” (Sahih Bukhari 1)
Review your goals every morning. Make dua, thank Allah for progress, and ask for His guidance. Starting your day with
this intention helps you stay mindful and motivated.
Step 4: Pair effort with faith
Islam encourages us to rely on Allah while putting in our best effort. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“Tie your camel and trust in Allah.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2517)
Break your goals into small, actionable steps. For example:
• Career goals: Dedicate time to learning new skills.
• Relationship goals: Spend quality time with family and friends for the sake of Allah.
• Spiritual goals: Increase acts of worship, like praying on time, reading Quran, and giving sadaqah.
Celebrate and seek Allah’s help
As you progress, thank Allah for your achievements and seek His forgiveness for shortcomings. Remember that growth is a journey, and Allah rewards effort:
“So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it.” (Quran 99:7)
Imagine looking back at the end of 2025 and feeling grateful for the positive changes in your life. By setting goals with sincerity, grounding them in faith, and working hard, you can make 2025 a year filled with barakah (blessings) and purpose.
Everything is possible by the Will of Allah.
