Piglet project proposal ‘misrepresented’, says Luwero Mayor

By Ahmed Idriss
Luweero Town Council leadership on Wednesday denied reports of plans to distribute piglets to Muslims as part of poverty alleviation efforts in the area.
In a meeting with Muslim leaders, led by Sheikh Mulindwa Ramadhan Swaib, the District Kadhi, Mayor Chris Buwembo clarified that there is no truth to these claims.
“During the council meeting where the pig project was proposed, it was Hajji Kakande Musa, a respected Muslim leader, who seconded the motion, instead of giving an alternative proposal for Muslim councillors and other faiths opposed to the pigs project,” Buwembo explained.
“This proposal was neither budgeted for nor approved by the Executive, and thus should not have been presented as a formal initiative,” he added.

The controversy arose when a local Imam told a gathering during a memorial prayer for the late Safia Kyalimpa that the mayor promised to give pigs to the Muslim community as part of a poverty alleviation initiative.
“The individual who reported this matter had a hidden agenda to taint my name,” Buwembo alleged, emphasizing that personal disputes within the council should not be misconstrued as religiously motivated.
Meanwhile, the Kadhi, citing Quranic teachings on cooperation and truthfulness, urged the community to remain calm and seek accurate information before reacting. He encouraged the mayor to work towards unity within the council and address misunderstandings proactively.
As part of the apology, Buwembo pledged UGX 1 million to support the construction of the ongoing modern toilet facility at the Muslim district headquarters.
Attendees included Lumu Nissan (Deputy Mayor), Sheikh Habib Musa Kikabi (District Kadhi Nakasongola), Uthuman Basajjanaku Lubega (District Secretary), among others.
