SEEKING KNOWLEDGE WITH HUMILITY AND PURPOSE

By Hatmah Nalugwa Ssekaaya

In Islam, seeking knowledge is an act of worship. It is not merely about gaining information, but about drawing closer to Allah, and living according to His guidance.

The Prophet Muhammad said:

“Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim.” – (Ibn Majah)

And Allah elevates those who seek knowledge:

“Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.”(Qur’an 58:11)

ADAB OF SEEKING KNOWLEDGE:

  • Have sincere intention (niyyah): Seek knowledge for the sake of Allah, not for status or argument.
  • Show respect to teachers: Listen attentively, avoid interrupting, and honor those who teach you.
  • Act upon what you learn: Knowledge without action is of little benefit.
  • Be humble: The more you learn, the more you realize how much you do not know.
  • Be patient and consistent: Knowledge is gained over time, not overnight.

Knowledge shapes belief, character, and actions. When sought with the right intention and manners, it becomes a source of guidance, wisdom, and reward.

Practical Tip: Start small by attending a weekly lesson, listen to a short reminder, or read a few pages of an Islamic book regularly, and apply what you learn.

Takeaway: True knowledge is not what we know. It is what we live.
