Are you ready for marriage, or just ready for a wedding?

“And among His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves so that you may find tranquility in them, and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for people who reflect.” – (Qur’an 30:21)

Every year, countless couples spend months planning their wedding day. Venues are booked. Guest lists are debated. Outfits are tailored. Cakes are tasted. Photo-shoots are scheduled. Social media countdowns begin.

Yet, after all the excitement fades and the guests return home, one question remains:

Were you preparing for a marriage, or simply preparing for a wedding?

A wedding lasts a day. A marriage, by Allah’s permission, is meant to last a lifetime.

Sadly, many people can tell you the colour of their wedding theme but have never discussed how they will handle disagreements. They know how many guests they will invite but have never talked about financial responsibilities, parenting, family boundaries, or spiritual growth together.

Marriage is far more than beautiful photographs and elegant decorations. It is a covenant before Allah. It is waking up beside the same person through seasons of joy and hardship. It is learning patience when emotions are tested, forgiveness when mistakes are made, and gratitude when blessings are abundant.

Preparing for marriage means asking different questions.

Am I emotionally mature enough to resolve conflict without insults or silence? Can I apologise sincerely when I am wrong? Am I financially responsible within my means? Will I encourage my spouse to grow closer to Allah, even when life becomes difficult? Can I sacrifice personal comfort for the well-being of our family?

These questions may not make exciting conversations at wedding meetings, but they build stronger marriages than expensive décor ever could.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us that the best marriages are built upon faith and good character. Beauty fades, wealth fluctuates, and circumstances change, but character remains one of the strongest foundations upon which love can stand.

For those still searching for a spouse, remember this: becoming the right person is just as important as finding the right person. Marriage should not be viewed as an escape from loneliness or a solution to personal struggles. Rather, it is a partnership in worship, growth, and mutual support.

Families also have an important role to play. Let us not make weddings so expensive and elaborate that they delay marriages. Simplicity carries barakah. A modest wedding accompanied by a righteous, loving marriage is far more successful than a lavish celebration followed by years of unhappiness.

As you dream about your future, ask yourself honestly:

Are you investing more in your wedding album than in your emotional maturity? More in your guest list than your communication skills? More in your attire than your taqwa?

The answers may determine not just how beautiful your wedding day becomes, but how fulfilling your marriage will be for years to come.

Because in the end, people will remember your wedding for a few hours. But you and your spouse will live your marriage every single day.

May Allah grant us spouses who become garments for us, as we become garments for them, filling our homes with sakinah, mercy, and lasting barakah… Ameen.
