By Issa Kigongo

The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, has presented a presidential award to the family of the late Sheikh Ibrahim Nkangi in recognition of his contribution to the development of the Muslim community.

The award, conferred by President Yoweri Museveni, was presented during a gathering at Rahman Mosque in Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District, on Friday, October 23.

Nkangi served for many years as the Kadhi of West Buganda Muslim District, from which Wakiso Muslim District was later created. He was also the paternal grandfather of the current Wakiso District Kadhi, Sheikh Erias Kigozi.

The late cleric was recognised for his service to Islam, his efforts to strengthen the Muslim community and his role in encouraging Muslims to participate in government development programmes.

The function also marked the commemoration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad and included prayers for candidates preparing for national examinations.

Addressing the gathering, Mubaje commended the leadership of Wakiso Muslim District for promoting unity and development under Kigozi.

He urged other Muslim districts to learn from Wakiso’s approach to managing Muslim affairs and mobilising communities for development.

The Mufti said the district’s progress reflected the vision he had pursued since assuming the leadership of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) 26 years ago.

He also thanked President Museveni for recognising Nkangi’s contribution to the Muslim community.

Mubaje also presented an award to Hajjat Hadija Namyalo, the administrator of the Office of the National Chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM).

MUSLIM LEADERS GRADUATE

During the function, Mubaje also awarded certificates to Imams and Muslim women leaders who had completed a short training course at Namasuba College of Commerce and Vocational Studies.

He commended the college’s principal, Dr Hajj Jamil Ssebalu Kijjambu, for introducing refresher courses intended to strengthen the leadership skills of Muslim clerics and women leaders.

The Mufti also led special prayers for candidates preparing to sit the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examinations.

He urged the candidates to remain disciplined, respect their parents and teachers, and maintain good morals as they prepare for their examinations.
