The strength of sabr: Responding to life with faith

By Hatmah Nalugwa Ssekaya
Patience (sabr) is one of the greatest qualities a Muslim can possess. It is not weakness or passive suffering—it is the ability to remain firm, calm, and faithful during hardship, delay, or difficulty.
Allah says:
“Indeed, Allah is with the patient.” – (Qur’an 2:153)
And He promises:
“Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without measure.” – (Qur’an 39:10)
Adab of patience:
- Remain calm during trials: Avoid panic, harsh words, or complaints against Allah’s decree.
- Control reactions: Patience is often shown in the first moments of difficulty.
- Trust Allah’s wisdom: Even when you do not understand the situation.
- Persevere in obedience: Sabr is also remaining consistent in worship and good deeds.
- Be patient with people: Families, neighbors, and communities require understanding and restraint.
The Prophet Muhammad said:
“Whoever remains patient, Allah will make him patient. Nobody can be given a blessing better and greater than patience.” – (Bukhari & Muslim)
Patience protects the heart from despair and keeps the believer connected to Allah during every season of life.
Practical Tip: When faced with frustration, pause before reacting and say: “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji‘un” or “Hasbunallahu wa ni‘mal wakeel.”
Takeaway: Patience is not the absence of pain—it is trusting Allah through it. Subuhaanallah!
Assalaam alaikhum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuhu…
