The Sunnah That Costs Nothing

A smile may seem like a small thing, but in Islam, even the simplest gesture can carry great reward.

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said:

“Your smile for your brother is charity.” (Tirmidhi)

SubhanAllah! Charity does not always require money. Sometimes it is simply the warmth we offer another person.

A smile can welcome a stranger, comfort someone having a difficult day, soften tension, or make another Muslim feel valued.

The Adab of Smiling

• Smile sincerely, not mockingly.
• Smile when greeting others.
• Smile at your family—not only at guests and strangers.
• Never use a smile to ridicule or embarrass someone.
• Make your presence a source of comfort, not intimidation.

The Prophet was known for his pleasant expression and beautiful character. His companions felt comfortable in his presence because he made people feel seen and respected.

Practical Tip:

Today, deliberately smile at the people you meet—your spouse, children, colleagues, neighbors, the security guard, the shopkeeper.

You may never know whose difficult day your smile has changed.
