NAMUNGO HAMZAH APPOINTED NEW CEO OF HOUSE OF ZAKAT AND WAQF UGANDA

Dr. Namungo Hamzah has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of the House of Zakat and Waqf Uganda, effective today. He takes over from Sheikh Mahmood Ssebugwawo Kibaate, who has led the institution since 2019.

Sheikh Kibaate’s tenure saw significant progress in establishing HoZWU as a key player in Islamic social finance, and Dr. Namungo now inherits this foundation with a commitment to expand the institution’s reach and deepen its impact across Uganda.

Dr. Namungo brings a formidable academic background that perfectly complements his practical experience. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Islamic Banking and Finance from Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah International Islamic University in Malaysia, a Master of Business Administration in Finance from the International University of East Africa, and an Executive Masters in Islamic Finance from INCEIF University in Malaysia, one of the world’s premier institutions for Islamic finance education.

His research contributions span key areas including FinTech adoption, Takaful feasibility, Sukuk structures, and the role of Zakat in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. He also serves as a Lecturer in Finance and Banking at Kampala International University, where he mentors the next generation of finance professionals.

A familiar figure at the House of Zakat and Waqf, Dr. Namungo’s journey with the institution began more than ten years ago. Over that period, he has served in various capacities including Head of Finance, Planning and Administration, and Head of Research and Training.

This extensive tenure has given him an intimate understanding of the institution’s operations, its challenges, and its vital mission to uplift communities through the institution of Zakat.
